The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture of the House of Representatives under its chairman Mr. Mr. Chrisanthos Savvidis, Mr. George Karoulas, Mr. Christos Christofidis, Mr. Andreas Apostolou and Mr. Alekos Tryfonidis paid a visit to Athens between 24-26 October 2023 and had separate meetings with the Ambassador of Cyprus in Athens, a delegation of the National Student Union of Cypriots (EFEK) of Athens, the President of the Hellenic Parliament, the Standing Committee on Educational Affairs, the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and a delegation of the Synod of Rectors of Greek Universities.
In the framework of these meetings, the problems faced by both Cypriot students in Greece and Greek students in Cyprus were discussed, as well as the challenges that youth and societies in Greece and Cyprus face today in the fields of education and culture. It is noted that in the context of the joint meeting between the Commission and the Standing Committee on Educational Affairs and the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, there was a commitment to study the issues raised in order to find solutions immediately and as far as possible.
In this regard, as a result of the above meetings, there was an immediate response to almost all requests for the transfer of Cypriot students to other higher educational institutions in Greece attended by members of their family, as well as the inclusion of Cypriot prospective students in a second allocation of available places in Greek higher educational institutions.
The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture will continue its efforts to cooperate at all levels with both the Greek Parliament and the Greek government to resolve all issues concerning education and culture in general.
