[PIO] Visit of the Minister of Justice and Public Order to the "House of Women"

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mrs Anna Koukkidi-Prokopiou, as the Minister responsible for gender equality, violence and human rights, visited the premises of the "House of Women" today, Tuesday, September 19, 2023. There she had the opportunity to be informed by the President of the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO) Mrs. Maria Haviara-Kousiosiou and the Scientific Director Mrs. Andri Andronikou about the services provided at the House, as well as about the Association's programs to support and empower victims of violence.

The Women's House operates as a multidisciplinary, multidisciplinary centre for the management of incidents of gender-based violence, serving a significant number of women victims of violence and their minor children annually. This interdisciplinary structure operates on a pilot basis in Nicosia and is staffed by a network of highly trained professionals, consisting of psychologists, lawyers, social workers and members of the Police.

Ms Prokopiou, who participates as a member of the Ad-Hoc Ministerial Committee tasked with overseeing the operation of the Women's House, stressed the necessity of supporting the operation of the Women's House by all possible means. As the Minister explained, this is a particularly important and innovative structure, which focuses on victims of violence and their individual needs, seeking immediate, comprehensive and effective support, protection and empowerment.

At the same time, the creation of the Women's House constitutes compliance with the provisions of the Istanbul Convention, while at the same time demonstrating the Government's practical support and commitment to combating all forms of gender-based violence and protecting human rights.

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, under whose responsibility the National Coordinating Body for the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women operates, expressed her full and unreserved support for the work of the Women's House and the Association for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in the Family. At the same time, it expressed its readiness to contribute to the resolution of any problems that may hamper the operation of the House, within the framework of the Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee on the operation of the Women's House.
