A two-day training seminar entitled "Creating and implementing policies to address gender-based violence in academia", co-organised by the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner and the Brussels-based Yellow Window team, concluded today. The seminar took place in the framework of the European project UniSAFE with trainers Ms Panagiota Polykarpou and Ms Vassia Madesi as experts.
The aim of the Programme is through applied knowledge the participants to develop skills to understand the concepts related to gender-based violence and its impact on the academic community as well as to use tools or create new ones that will bring visibility to the phenomenon of gender-based violence, in the research and wider academic field, in order to address it radically. During the seminar, the 7 Ps (Prevalence, Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Provision of services, Partnerships and Policies) tool was presented which promotes a holistic approach to addressing gender-based violence in research centres and academic institutions.
Gender Equality Commissioner, Ms. Josie Christodoulou in her introductory intervention underlined the importance of systematic information on preventing and combating gender-based violence, stressing that universities play a crucial role in the prevention of the phenomenon. She said that the seminar reminds us that gender violence is not a local or national issue but a global issue and through systematic information, targeted actions and cooperation we can work towards combating it. In conclusion, she expressed to the participants the intention of her Office to provide any support requested within the framework of its mandate.
The seminar was attended by representatives of the University of Cyprus, the University of Technology, Frederick University, European University, Neapolis Paphos University and Limassol University.
