[PIO] Training for the use of material of the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) on differentiation in special and general classrooms

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY) held on Wednesday, 5 June 2024 at the Pedagogical Institute in Nicosia, the first of a series of trainings organized by the MESY in collaboration with the Institute of Educational Policy of Greece (IEP).

The training series aims to make use of the material created by the IEP of Greece on Special Education, which is available here. More detailed information on this material was provided in a previous circular (Ref. 03.08.002.003.004, dated 27/3/24), with the encouragement for its appropriate use as a means for differentiating teaching and education of students with disabilities and/or special educational needs.

The Training was attended by the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athina Michaelidou, who referred to the importance of informing teachers, as differentiated teaching is a key priority of the Ministry and part of the effort for the transition from Special to Integrated Education and the formation of the inclusive school.

Then followed the main presentation on "Accessible educational material for the differentiation of teaching in the context of special and inclusive education", during which part of the educational material posted on the relevant platform of the IEP was presented. This was followed by three parallel sessions by the Consultants of the Institute of Educational Policy, Ms. Hantzoulis Eleni, Ms. Gelastopoulou Maria and Ms. Afentoulidou Anna, which were addressed to Primary Education teachers of grades A'-C', Special Education teachers and Secondary Education teachers respectively. These sessions highlighted inclusive differentiated strategies and good practices, adapted to the needs of each audience. Through the interaction with the material, an interesting discussion was provoked and pathways were created for the use of this material in the Cypriot school.

Finally, it is noted that the training will be repeated in the coming days, Thursday and Friday (6-7 June) in the districts of Limassol and Larnaca, respectively.
