The Deputy Ministry of Culture expresses its deepest sorrow for the loss of the poet, prose writer and playwright Roula Ioannidou-Stavrou. Roula Ioannidou-Stavrou was a very active and multifaceted personality, whose contribution stood out particularly in the field of literature.
Roula Ioannidou-Stavrou studied Greek and English literature at the University of Athens. She later undertook postgraduate studies at the Royal Society of Arts (UK) and obtained her diploma with distinction in teaching. She attended music and piano lessons for many years.
As a teacher, she served in secondary education and in various departments of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, as a researcher, writer, anthologist and editor. She was a member of Editorial Committees of Anthologies and other publications. She also served as a Consultant Professor. In 2001 she founded the Cultural Centre Literatura et Artes.
Roula Ioannidou-Stavrou wrote poetry, short stories, theatre, children's literature and monographs. She has published 30 books. She was awarded the Jean Monnet and Nosside Poetry World Award for her contribution. She has also been honoured by Hestia Nea Smyrni, the National Society of Greek Writers of Cyprus, the Association of Historical Memory of the EOKA 1955-59 Struggle, the EOKO Greece, as well as by various authorities and organisations in Cyprus and Greece. Her first poetry work Poems, published in 1974, was awarded a Commendation in the framework of the State Literature Awards of the Ministry of Education.
Her works have been translated into foreign languages and published in independent editions, while others have been published in prestigious foreign journals and anthologies. They were also presented on radio and television, as well as in the theatre.
The loss of Roula Ioannidou-Stavros is great for the literature and intellectual life of Cyprus.
