[PIO] The State Literature Awards for the Publications of 2022 were awarded

The State Literature Prizes for the 2022 editions were awarded by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, at a special ceremony, which was held with great success at the Pallas Cinema Theatre, last night, Tuesday 5 December 2023.

Congratulating the winners, Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Kasssianidou noted that the State Literature Awards, which are an emblematic institution of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, express the State's long-standing support for the country's literature, adding that, through this competitive institution, one of the most important pages of the modern history of Cyprus' literature is written and the cultural values of Cyprus are highlighted.

The institution of the State Literature Awards, after 55 years of uninterrupted presence, is modernized and meets the requirements of each era, the Deputy Minister said, among other things.

She noted that this is the second ceremony within the framework of the institution since the establishment of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, and stressed that the establishment of the Deputy Ministry is a historic act that actively contributes to the effective implementation of a coherent strategy in culture. He stated that among the responsibilities of the State Ministry of Culture is the development of a policy to encourage publishing activity and the development of literature.

The Deputy Minister spoke about the institution, about the honorees and the honorees, but also about the actions of the Deputy Ministry aimed at supporting and developing publishing activity and literature in Cyprus.

Specifically, the Prize in the Poetry category was awarded to Panagiotis Nicolaides with his work "Rimaho" (Smili Publications). In the Novel category, the Prize was awarded to Konstantia Sotiriou for her work "Brandy Sour" (Pataki Publications). The Prize in the category Short Story/Novel was awarded to Maria A. Ioannou for her work "The Intermediaries" (Nefeli Publications). Pavlos Andreou with his work "Ice Tears" (Thraka Publications) received the Prize in the category Young Writer's Prize, while in the category Literature for Young Children the winner was Despina Irakleous for her work "Where did the ghosts go?" (Diavlasi Publications). The Prize in the category Literature for Older Children and Adolescents was awarded to Petros Panaou, for his work "Operation Logos: The Mystery of the Cell Phone" (Telia Publications) and the Illustration Award for Literary Books for Children and Adolescents to Chryso Charalambous for her illustration of the work "1000 Ways to Squeeze a Lemon", (author: Danae Daska, Papadopoulos Publications).

The ceremony was opened by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Giorgos Kountouris, while the rationale for the awards was read by the Presidents of the Jury Committees Pantelis Voutouris, Angeliki Yiannikopoulou and Konstantinos Georgiou.

It is worth noting that the institution of the State Literature Awards has been operating since 1968. Since then, 55 years have passed and it continues to run uninterrupted, while its purpose is to highlight the most important literary works each year, as well as to continue the creative dialogue.
