On Saturday, 18 December 2021, a unique exhibition of historical toys, entitled "ONEPOLIS", will open at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art - SPEL.B-3]
The magical world of toys presented in the exhibition is part of the rare toy collection of the S.O.F.I.A. (Association of Organized Philological and Historical Archives) Foundation. The toy collection of the S.O.F.I.A. Foundation has been certified by international auction houses as one of the most important collections of its kind in the world. Toys are undoubtedly a mirror of the society in which we live. Through them we can learn the history of different cultures, and they are a useful educational tool for learning our first knowledge of arithmetic and reading, or recognising shapes and colours. However, the same pedagogical property of toys has also been used at times as a tool of propaganda and manipulation by totalitarian regimes. The exhibition "DREAMPOLIS" promises an exciting journey into the world of toys, through rare exhibits, interactive educational programmes, colours, drawings, constructions and many surprises for young and old alike. On each of the four levels of the SPEL exhibition space, different categories of toys are presented, such as trains, airplanes, dolls, teddy bears, mechanical and tin toys, construction toys, shadow theatre, space and TV toys, etc. One of these precious exhibits, the unique sculpture of recycled toysSchoolboy - Student, by Vangelis Lioudakis, welcomes the public to the reception.
The exhibition is the largest presentation of historical toys in Cyprus to date and is addressed to all age groups. This exciting tour will cultivate the imagination and creativity of children and adolescents, stimulating their curiosity, and will invite the older ones on a journey to their childhood, reminiscing games of the era and at the same time exploring them from different perspectives. The exhibition "ONEPOLIS" will be accompanied by parallel events, such as workshops, guided tours and presentations, and will be accompanied by a special publication. The programme of events will be announced.The event is a collaboration between the S.O.F.I.A. Foundation and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth - Cultural Services and the Aradippou Toy Museum.
