The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs Anita Demetriou received today, in a farewell meeting, the Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis in view of the end of his term of office in Cyprus.
The Speaker of the Parliament expressed the deep appreciation, respect and gratitude of all the members of the Parliament to the Chief and the work done for the defence and security of our country. In this regard, he praised Mr. Zervakis' decisive contribution to the upgrading of the National Guard, the armament programmes and the Force's strength and expressed confidence that Mr. Zervakis will continue to be a strong friend of Cyprus.
The Chief of the National Guard expressed his sincere thanks for the excellent cooperation with the Parliament and in particular with the Parliamentary Defence Committee for the excellent coordination of synergies within the framework of each side's responsibilities.
During the meeting, views were exchanged on current developments at the geostrategic and political level and on the politically difficult circumstances we are going through due to Turkey's increasingly provocative actions. Furthermore, the commitment to promoting peace and stability in our country was confirmed.
