The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Zheng Jianbang, who is visiting Cyprus at the head of a multi-member delegation, consisting of the Vice-Chairman of the Social Development Committee. Song Xiuyan, the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Agricultural and Rural Affairs Mr. Wang Gang and the Member of the EPP's Chinese Diaspora Committee Mr. Yan Xiaoming, as well as high-ranking officials of the EPP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. The delegation was accompanied by the Ambassador of China to Cyprus Mr. Liu Yantao.
During the meeting, the excellent level of relations between Cyprus and China was underlined, which, it was noted, are based on common principles, mutual trust and solidarity and especially on the commitment of the two countries to the principle of "One China - One Cyprus". In this context, the common will to further strengthen relations and cooperation in areas of common interest, on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Parliaments of Cyprus and China in 2018 and in support of the objectives set out in the Strategic Partnership agreed between the leaders of the two countries in 2021, was underlined.
The Speaker of the Parliament expressed sincere thanks for China's firm principled position, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, regarding the Cyprus problem and its resolution efforts. Demetriou underlined the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the objective of resuming negotiations within the agreed negotiating framework to reach a solution on the basis of international law and the relevant UN Resolutions. He stressed that the Turkish side's claim for a "two-state" solution, which would legitimise the achievements of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation, will never be accepted. At the same time, the Speaker reaffirmed Cyprus' firm position on issues of major importance for the friendly country.
The Vice President of the EPP expressed his country's sincere appreciation for Cyprus' firm principled position on issues of major importance to China, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Tibet. He also assured the Speaker of the Parliament of his country's firm support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus and the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN Resolutions. Mr Zheng also expressed thanks for the constructive role of the Republic of Cyprus, as a Member State of the European Union, in EU-China relations and the expectation that Cyprus will actively contribute towards their improvement and further development. Expressing concern over the military flare-up in the Middle East, Demetriou said that Cyprus condemned the terrorist attack by Hamas and supports the resumption of talks to reach a two-state solution to the Middle East issue, in line with the relevant UN resolutions and previous agreements. He noted the important role that Cyprus can play as a factor of security and stability and through its initiative to establish a maritime corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The message we are conveying today is that the answer to these challenges must be cooperation based on adherence to our common principles and values, she concluded.
