The President of the Parliament stressed the importance of joining forces to defend democracy and protect citizens, in view of the worrying developments that are taking place in the wider world and particularly in our region.

The President of the Parliament stressed the importance of joining forces to defend democracy and protect citizens, especially in our region. Referring to the current situation regarding the Cyprus problem, Demetriou noted as a positive development the appointment of a Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General and underlined our side's commitment to the objective of resuming talks to reach a solution on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. He also underlined the need for the European Union to play a more active role in the Cyprus problem. We expect our partners, he stressed, to show the same determination in the case of Cyprus, which has been suffering the consequences of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation for fifty years, as was rightly demonstrated in the case of Ukraine. At the same time, he expressed concern about the difficult times we are living through and the great antagonisms expressed in the Middle East, Ukraine and elsewhere, which also affect developments in relation to the Cyprus problem. He pointed out that we should not be blind to the role Turkey is claiming in the wider region on the basis of its long-standing aspirations.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on the upcoming elections for the European Parliament. The President of the Parliament stressed that democracies must act as a bulwark against extreme ideologies and populism, but also against pervasive toxicity and cannibalism, especially in social media, phenomena which, she pointed out, alienate women and young people from political life and which need to be effectively addressed through legislation. Finally, issues relating to local government were discussed, in view of the forthcoming implementation of the reform in Cyprus, as well as issues of concern to both countries in the field of higher education.
