Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou received today the new High President of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Organization (AHEPA), Mr.Savvas Tsiviko. Mr. Tsivikos was accompanied by AHEPA Cyprus President Mr. George Kallenos.

In welcoming Mr. Tsivikos, the Speaker of the House of Representatives congratulated him on his election to the highest office of AHEPA, which is a great honor for him and Cyprus, indicative, as she pointed out, of the important role and work that Cypriot expatriates perform as the best ambassadors of Cyprus abroad. Demetriou praised AHEPA's continued interest and substantial action on issues that concern and affect Cyprus, first and foremost the Cyprus problem, and highlighted the importance of regular communication and coordination for the effective management of these issues.

Specifically with regard to the Cyprus problem, concern was expressed about Turkish methods and intensifying provocations against the Republic of Cyprus, in the light of the recent incidents in Pyla. The importance of highlighting the correct basis of the Cyprus problem, as an international problem of invasion and occupation, and the need to immediately resume talks to reach a just and viable solution, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions, was underlined. To this end, it was pointed out, it is necessary to keep the international community informed and to claim the practical support of the international actor on the basis of principles, as in the case of Ukraine. Demetriou made special reference to the added value of parliamentary diplomacy and the importance of further strengthening relations between the House of Representatives and the US Congress, noting her forthcoming visit to the US.

Mr. Chivicos informed the Speaker of the House of Representatives about AHEPA's decision to hold its 2024 International Annual Conference for the first time in Cyprus, in Larnaca, next July, with the participation of a significant number of delegates and guests. Welcoming this decision, Demetriou expressed the readiness of the House of Representatives to assist in every possible way in the successful organization of the Conference.
