The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the new Ambassador of Poland to Cyprus, Mr Marek Szczepanowski, on the occasion of his assumption of office.

During the meeting, the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and the common will for their further development, especially at the parliamentary level, were underlined. In this context, it was noted the significant boost given to bilateral relations by the official visits to Cyprus of the Speaker of the Lower House of the Polish Parliament last May and the President of Poland in October 2021.

The Speaker expressed her sincere appreciation for Poland's firm principled position and support for the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. Demetriou underlined the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the objective of resuming the talks from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, in order to reach a solution in accordance with international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, which will reunite the country in conditions of lasting peace and security.

The President of the Parliament underlined the consistent principled position of the Republic of Cyprus in all cases of violation of international law. At the same time and given the fact that in reality there are no "frozen conflicts", Demetriou stressed, the international community must demonstrate consistency on the part of the international community with regard to these principles and avoid the logic of two measures and two stations.

Mr Szczepanowski reaffirmed Poland's firm principled position and readiness to support in every possible way the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He also expressed his country's appreciation for Cyprus' unwavering support for Ukraine and its full compliance with European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia, despite the significant costs for the country.

Szczepanowski also briefed the President of the Parliament on current developments in Poland following last October's elections.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on issues of European interest. Finally, the possibility of undertaking joint initiatives and actions in the context of the 20th anniversary of the accession of the two countries to the EU was discussed.

Mrs Demetriou expressed the readiness of the House of Representatives for any possible cooperation in this direction.
