The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs. Anita Demetriou received today the Minister of Defence of Armenia Mr. Suren Papikyan. Mr Papikyan was accompanied by high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defence of Armenia.
During the meeting, the fraternal relations between Cyprus and Armenia were underlined, which, it was noted, are based on the strong historical, religious and cultural ties between the two countries and are governed by solidarity and mutual support on major issues concerning each country. Special reference was made to the significant presence of the Armenian community, as an integral part of the Cypriot society, as the Speaker of the Parliament mentioned.
The Speaker of the Parliament expressed Cyprus' unreserved sympathy and support to Armenia and its friendly people, noting that the Republic of Cyprus was the first country in Europe and the second in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Demetriou condemned the flagrant violations of international law and human rights of the Armenian population in Nagorno Karabakh, stressing that Cyprus, as a result of its own painful experience of the invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory by Turkey, can fully understand the suffering of the Armenian people.
The Speaker of the Parliament condemned the logic of two measures and two stations on the part of the international community and stressed the need for further cooperation and coordination in international steps to defend common principles to which the two countries remain firmly committed.
Referring to the current developments regarding the Cyprus problem, the Speaker expressed hope that the imminent appointment of the UN Secretary General's envoy will pave the way for the resumption of talks, from the point where they were interrupted, within the agreed framework, towards a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions.
The Armenian Defence Minister expressed gratitude for Cyprus' long-standing solidarity and support to Armenia and its people and stressed his country's principled position in favour of reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the UN Resolutions on Cyprus.
Papikyan noted that Armenia is making efforts to consolidate peace and stability and informed the Speaker about the ongoing talks aimed at reaching a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, which, as he noted, occupies part of the territory of the Republic of Armenia.
Finally, the existence of significant prospects for further strengthening cooperation between the two countries at the bilateral and multilateral levels was noted, with special reference to the added value of parliamentary diplomacy.
