The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the Ambassador of Hungary to Cyprus, Dr Krisztina Lakos, on the occasion of her assumption of office.
Mrs Demetriou wished Dr Lakos every success in her work and expressed her and the House of Representatives' readiness for the best possible cooperation with the Embassy of Hungary.
During the meeting, the bilateral relations between the Parliaments of the two countries were reviewed, with reference to the official visit to Cyprus of the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly in 2021 and the prospects for further development of inter-parliamentary dialogue and cooperation, especially during the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the second half of 2024.
The President of the Parliament stressed the importance of adhering to and preserving common European principles and values in the light of the complex challenges facing the EU today, in a spirit of unity and solidarity, especially in addressing key issues such as migration. In this regard, Ms Demetriou underlined the need to assume collective responsibility and to conclude readmission agreements with third countries at European level.
Finally, views were exchanged on current issues of wider European interest.
