The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ms Anita Demetriou, received today the Ambassador of France to Cyprus, Ms Salina Grenet-Catalano.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed her gratitude for the principled stance and the long-standing support of France, as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council and Member State of the European Union (EU), with regard to the Cyprus problem and the efforts being made for the resumption of talks towards its resolution, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions. Ms Grenet-Catalano stressed the importance of creating the appropriate conditions for a rapid resumption of the talks.

The President also expressed thanks for France's practical solidarity with Cyprus' efforts to manage its disproportionate migratory pressures, including the relocation of beneficiaries of international protection to France under the EU's voluntary solidarity mechanism.

During the meeting, both sides underlined the close cooperation relations between Cyprus and France, based on common principles, and discussed ways to further boost inter-parliamentary exchanges, especially at the level of the Speakers of the two Parliaments, as well as in the European and multilateral context. Reference was made to the submission of an application for the participation of the House of Representatives in the Francophone Parliamentary Assembly. Concern was expressed about the violation of international law and human rights of the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh as a result of the Azerbaijani military offensive. The President of the Parliament stressed that the EU must act decisively in all cases of violation of international law and human rights, as it rightly does for Ukraine, and stand by the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh.
