The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the Ambassador of Brazil to Cyprus, Mr Eduardo Augusto Ibiapina de Seixas.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives said that the ongoing crisis in Ukraine touches on the flagrant violation of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of a European country. Cyprus has been suffering for 48 years the painful consequences of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory, the Speaker of the House said, stressing the need to show unity and solidarity as the only possible way to face the challenges that Europe and the world at large have to deal with.

The President expressed sincere appreciation for Brazil's long-standing principled stance on the Cyprus problem and its efforts to resolve it on the basis of international legitimacy. The desire of the Greek Cypriot side, Ms Demetriou stressed, is the resumption of negotiations, aiming at the reunification of our homeland in conditions of peace, security and prosperity.

The Brazilian Ambassador, noting his country's long-standing presence in Cyprus and its contribution to UNFICYP, underlined his country's firm commitment to the principles of international law and respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. Mr. Ibiapina de Seixas reaffirmed Brazil's support for efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation and the rejection of any illegal actions and secessionist statements.

During the meeting, a common will was expressed to further strengthen cooperation and exchanges between the Parliaments of Cyprus and Brazil at all levels, particularly through the respective Friendship Groups in the two Parliaments.

Finally, there was an exchange of views on issues of common interest, such as the climate crisis. The Brazilian Ambassador noted the leading role of Cyprus in efforts to address climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Ms Demetriou underlined the readiness of the House of Representatives and the House of Representatives to undertake joint initiatives and actions in areas of common interest.
