The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs.Anita Demetriou received the Ambassador of Austria Mrs.Dorothea Auer on the occasion of the completion of her mandate in Cyprus.
During the meeting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed her appreciation for the contribution of Mrs. Auer's contribution to the further development of relations and cooperation between Austria and Cyprus and the parliaments of the two countries.
Demetriou stressed that these relations are based on common principles and values, to which Cyprus remains firmly committed and, on this basis, she condemned from the very first moment the Russian invasion of Ukraine, despite the costs it suffered. Expressing concern about the intensifying provocations of the illegal occupation regime within the buffer zone, the Speaker stressed the urgent need to resume talks to resolve the Cyprus problem within the agreed negotiating framework and in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions.
They also discussed the particular difficulties faced by Cyprus and Austria due to the increased flows of irregular migrants, an issue which, it was pointed out, breeds populism and nationalism. The President of the Parliament stressed the need for a unified and collective response from the European Union to this challenge, on the basis of solidarity and fair sharing of responsibility and the promotion of more EU readmission agreements with third countries. Ms Demetriou stressed more broadly the importance of unity within the Union in order to address more effectively major political issues and other common challenges that arise. Demetriou for the close cooperation with the House of Representatives during her term of office, making particular reference to joint actions undertaken on issues of equality and women's empowerment.
