The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the Ambassador of Armenia to Cyprus, based in Athens, Mr Tigran Mkrtchyan. Also present at the meeting was the Representative of the Armenian religious group in the House of Representatives, Mr. Vartkes Mahtesyan.
During the meeting, both sides underlined the excellent relations between Cyprus and Armenia, as well as the historical ties between the two peoples, which are characterized by solidarity and mutual support on the major issues of each country.
Mrs Demetriou expressed, among other things, sincere thanks for Armenia's principled stance on the Cyprus problem and its long-standing support for our side's efforts to find a solution. Reiterating our side's commitment to achieving a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, Demetriou expressed hope that the efforts of the UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy will soon lead to the resumption of direct negotiations between the two sides.
The President also reaffirmed to Mr. Mkrtchyan Cyprus' full support for Armenia's efforts to preserve its national sovereignty and territorial integrity and respect for the human rights of the Armenian people. He stressed that Cyprus is in a position to fully understand the trials of the Armenian people as a result of its own painful experience of the invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory by Turkey. He underlined the need for joint actions and coordination between Cyprus and Armenia to promote the national issues of each country, including humanitarian issues such as that of the missing persons. Mkrtchyan expressed his warm thanks for Cyprus' long-standing solidarity and support to Armenia and its people and reaffirmed his country's principled position in favour of reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with the UN Resolutions on Cyprus. Mr. Mkrtchyan also noted his country's commitment to Armenia's European perspective.
Finally, views were exchanged on ways to further strengthen relations and cooperation between the two countries and especially their Parliaments, especially in the framework of international parliamentary organizations.
