The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anita Demetriou, visited the Embassy of Israel today to express her sympathy and support to the state and people of Israel for the large-scale attack by Hamas. Mrs Demetriou was received by the Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr Oren Anolik.
Afterwards, the Speaker made a statement in which she expressed Cyprus' full solidarity and support to the friendly people of Israel. What we have seen unfolding in recent days and hours, she said, is an atrocity, a barbarity against innocent people, civilians, women and girls. The Hamas terrorist attack, Demetriou stressed, is an attack on peace and the international community must denounce it and support Israel in this ordeal. The message must be collective and clear: no tolerance for terrorism. No ideological, religious, political or other differences can justify what is happening and our response and support must be universal, the Speaker said.
Anolik expressed sincere thanks for the Speaker's visit to the Embassy of Israel and for the statement of solidarity and support for his country. He noted that these are very difficult days for Israel, where scenes of unspeakable violence against civilians are unfolding. He expressed appreciation for the strong and massive support of Cyprus for his country, describing it as a beacon of light in the dark days of the war unleashed by Hamas against peace and human rights. Demetriou reaffirmed Cyprus' firm commitment to principles and stressed the need for the international community to condemn immediately and comprehensively the Hamas attack as a matter of peace, stability and survival in the wider region. Demetriou also criticized Turkey's complacent attitude in this case, as it does elsewhere. Finally, the President expressed her and the House's readiness to support the people of Israel in every possible way.
