The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs.Anita Demetriou, received today the Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator at the US Department of State, Mr.Richard Nephew, during his visit to Cyprus. Mr. Nephew was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Cyprus Ms. Julie Fisher.
The President of the House of Representatives briefed Mr. Nephew on the constitutional peculiarities and limitations that exist as a result of the strict separation of powers. Demetriou pointed out that in recent years the anti-corruption framework has been significantly strengthened with the adoption of important legislation, including judicial reform, the establishment of the Independent Authority against Corruption, the framework for public decision-making procedures (lobbying), as well as the framework for the protection of persons who report violations of EU and national law (whistleblowers).
The President of the Parliament underlined the important role played by the legislative body, particularly at the level of the competent parliamentary committees, in monitoring and ensuring the proper implementation of the executive's commitments.
Finally, Mrs Demetriou stressed her and the House of Representatives' commitment to contribute in every possible way, in the exercise of their powers, to further strengthen the legislative framework for preventing and combating corruption and to fill any gaps. Nephew showed interest in the Republic of Cyprus' efforts in this area and views were exchanged on more specific aspects of the issue.
