The Government's intention to strengthen its relations with the International Thalassaemia Federation (ICF), through the signing of a memorandum of understanding, was announced today by the Minister of Health, Mr. Mr. Damianos said that the Memorandum of Cooperation will be between the Ministry of Health and the ICF and through this it is expected to further strengthen cooperation on this important issue.

Mr. Damianos said that the Memorandum of Cooperation will be between the Ministry of Health and the ICF. The Minister welcomed, on behalf of the President of the Republic, the "1st Regional Summit on Thalassaemia and Other Haemoglobin Diseases in the Middle East and North Africa Region", which was convened in Cyprus by the International Thalassaemia Federation and the Forum of Arab Thalassaemia Associations

Damianos said: "Our country is leading actions aimed at improving the quality of life of patients, including through the establishment of the first global National Thalassaemia Committee and the adoption of a National Thalassaemia Strategy, focusing on achieving further progress in the control, prevention and management of thalassaemia, including the provision of genetic counselling, prenatal screening and advanced medical care to affected individuals."

Concluding his address, the Minister of Health congratulated the ICF for its unwavering commitment to the global fight against thalassaemia. He also noted that "through its extensive network of 240 member organisations in more than 60 countries in all regions of the world, the ICF has played a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of thalassaemia worldwide, through very difficult times when knowledge and expertise on how to effectively prevent and appropriately treat the disease was almost non-existent."
