The Ministry of Interior announces that the works for the construction of a second reinforcing fence around the perimeter of the First Reception Centre "Pournara" (KEPY), in the community of Kokkinotrimithia, have been completed.
This fencing at the KEPY has been installed with the aim of restricting residents within the Centre, ensuring control of their inputs and outputs, both for their own safety and for the safety and well-being of the residents of the wider area. By reinforcing the fencing at the Centre, it is possible to prevent/impede the exit and movement of migrants to the community of Kokkinotrimithia or to other areas.
It is noted that during the period of stay of the residents at the "Pournara" KEPF, the residents are not allowed to leave the Centre for reasons of public safety and health, until the necessary procedures are completed, which last for a short period of time. It is recalled that the "Purnara" CPEI operates as a first reception area for migrants who enter the Republic irregularly and the procedures include identification of persons, their application for asylum, checks (police and medical), as well as information of incoming persons as to their rights and obligations within the country.
It is reported that there are far fewer residents at the CPEI than on the same date last year. Specifically, yesterday, the number of residents at the Centre was 692, while last year, on the same day, there were 1,698.
The average number of residents is much lower due to the reduced arrivals and therefore the number of asylum applications in the Republic of Cyprus compared to last year, which have decreased by more than 50%. Specifically, while for the period March - August 2022 asylum applications amounted to 11,961, for this year, 2023, applications in the corresponding period were 5,866. Also, the number of asylum seekers decreased due to the acceleration of procedures within the Centre and the reinforcement of the Centre with additional staff from the Asylum Service.
