The School of Magistrates, taking into account the modern requirements and challenges that Family Court judges have to face, successfully organized a training seminar on Family Law issues on November 24 at the Supreme Court.

The speakers at the seminar were Ms Despo Michailidou, former Judge of the Supreme Court and Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights and Ms Eugenia Tsiora, Appellate Judge at the Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki and Lecturer at the National School of Judicial Officers. The Seminar was attended by the Judges of the Family Court and Legal Officers of the Supreme Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court.

The participants and the speakers were welcomed by the Director of the School, Mr. George Erotokritou, who in his address acknowledged the important work of the Judges of the Family Court, especially in cases involving children.

He stressed that "time is perhaps the most important parameter for safeguarding the interests of the child and for preventing psychological abuse because the longer the delay in adjudicating cases of delinquency and taking compliance measures, the greater the risk of short-term and long-term harm to the child who remains with the alienating parent".

Ms Michaelidou's speech focused mainly on the Cypriot reality regarding the delay in the adjudication of cases and the creation of de facto situations, as well as the enforcement of Court orders concerning the custody and guardianship of children and the problems that arise, particularly with regard to the issue of parental alienation, with reference to the case law of the ECtHR.

Ms. Tsiora focused on the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction ratified by the Republic of Cyprus by Law 11(III)/1994, as well as on International and European Conventions and ECtHR jurisprudence regarding the need to avoid lengthy procedures that affect the best interests of the child, particularly in matters of parental responsibility and violations of parental responsibility orders.

The Seminar is part of the Judicial School's funding from the Recovery and Resilience Project.
