The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Aristos Damianou, and the Deputy Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee on Health Mrs. Savia Orfanidou had a joint meeting today, at the House of Representatives, with the Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for "Promoting our European Way of Life" Mr.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior Mr. Aristos Damianou referred to the issue of migration, which is of particular concern to the Committee on Interior. The Chairmen Mr Georgiades and Mr Damianou stressed the difficulties faced by Cyprus in managing the increasing migratory flows, making special reference to the difficulty of implementing the returns and asked for the assistance of the EU to address the pressures faced by the country.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Mrs Savia Orphanidou, expressed her satisfaction with the way the European Union responded to the pandemic and welcomed the actions of Mr Schinas and the Commissioner for Health, Mrs Stella Kyriakidou, both on the issues of vaccine supply and the promotion of the European Health Union. Mrs Orphanidou made a special reference to the issue of the fight against cancer, informing Mr Schinas about the National Cancer Strategy and the intention of Cyprus to establish a Cancer Institute. After referring to his special ties with Cyprus, Mr. Schinas then outlined the objectives set by the European Commission for the geopolitical autonomy of Europe, the transition towards a green and digital Union, the implementation of the Recovery Plan, the development of skills, the promotion of the European Health Union and the successful management of migration.

The discussion then focused on the developments around Migration, where Mr Schinas referred to the importance of reaching a comprehensive agreement and the need to find intermediate solutions until a new Pact on Immigration and Asylum is reached. Regarding Cyprus, Schinas acknowledged that Cyprus is under the greatest pressure from all EU countries due to its small size and the existence of the Green Line, stressed that the EU stands by Cyprus in the challenges it faces and expressed the EU's intention to support Cyprus with financial resources and technological solutions and underlined the importance of today's signature of the Memorandum of Cooperation and Action Plan between the EU and Cyprus. Mr Schinas acknowledged the difficulties that Cyprus is facing on the issue of returns and said that it is necessary that the return system is not dealt with separately by each Member State but by the EU as a whole.
