The first global review should demonstrate that the parties to the Paris Agreement have produced results and will continue to do so on the basis of the agreed long-term objectives, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides said today.

Welcoming the High Level Meeting to review adaptation to the provisions of the Paris Agreement, held this afternoon in Dubai in the context of the COP28 Climate Change Summit, President Christodoulides said, inter alia, that States participating in the Summit should, among other things, ensure that the capacity and expertise of developing countries is enhanced to improve the design and implementation of their national climate policies.

He added that Cyprus is at the centre of a region where the impacts of climate change are most severe, noting that the need for adaptation is a priority, which is why intensive work is being done at both national and regional levels to find appropriate policies and actions.

The President noted that the Republic of Cyprus, recognising the need for greater understanding and adaptability to climate change, has developed an initiative aimed at creating a mechanism for the development of a climate change adaptation mechanism.
