The President of the Republic Mr Nicos Christodoulides paid an unscheduled visit today to the area of Agios Dometios, near the "House of Mary", to be briefed on the progress of the measures taken in the area by the Republic of Cyprus following the Turkish violation in the buffer zone.

During his stay there, President Christodoulides spoke with local residents and visited National Guard outposts, accompanied by the Force Commander.

Then, in a statement, the President of the Republic, referring to his visit there, said: "I came to see for myself personally what has been done, the violation that has been done by the occupying army, but more to talk to the people, to the residents of the area.

It is very important for me to hear from them. And I have to say that from everything they conveyed to me they feel safe. I have discussed with them whether there are other measures that the Republic of Cyprus can go ahead with. We had some discussions and what they mentioned will of course be taken into account.

At the same time, my presence here was to see the implementation of the measures that we had taken as the Republic of Cyprus, some of these measures relate to this particular region, and to see in practice their implementation."

When asked, President Christodoulides refused to comment on anything concerning the measures taken by the Republic of Cyprus, noting "Some measures are visible and some measures are not visible. We are not going to enter into a public debate on the decisions that have been taken.

Our priority is one: that people feel safe. That is our priority and that is the direction we are working towards."

He added: "It was very important for me to hear from the residents themselves that they feel safe and see the difference that has been made since the decisions were made, for me that is important. The Chief (of the National Guard) is here, there is a daily assessment by the Services of the Republic of Cyprus and whatever is needed we will do."

Asked about the steps the Republic of Cyprus intends to take in relation to the Turkish violation of the buffer zone, the President said "The violation is here, a very negative development. We are not satisfied with just a record in the occasional reports in relation to the activities of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus. We will continue our efforts to remove what has been done and it is not something that we minimize in any way."
