The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace today: [/B]"The special meeting on the preparation of the State Budget for 2025 was held today. As the President of the Republic said at the opening of the meeting, the preparation of the State Budget is part of the implementation of President Christodoulides' governance programme, which is his social contract with the citizens.

A prerequisite, and this is a given, is that the budget for 2025 will be in surplus again this year and, similarly to last year, at the beginning of the year the President of the Republic will again proceed with the public presentation of the priorities for 2025.

As the President of the Republic has mentioned, the budget of a state sends the stamp that every government wants to leave on society. And the priorities for 2025, as for the second half of 2024, will be, of course, the rapid acceleration of the digital transformation of our country, but also bold reforms that have the citizen and the benefit of the citizen at their heart.

The green transition and dealing with the consequences of the climate crisis, which we see and experience every day, as well as measures to tackle under-generation, especially in our country, must be put at the centre.

The emphasis will of course be on supporting the middle class, on reviving the middle class, as the President of the Republic has mentioned.

The meeting will resume with a new date later this week for the other ministries to continue. And what is taking place in these special meetings is through targeting, through a very specific exchange of views in each ministry, in each deputy ministry, in terms of portfolio, so that we can achieve the necessary actions for the major reforms that we want to implement."

When asked, the Spokesman said that today "the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, the Deputy Ministry of Culture, the Deputy Minister of European Affairs, of course, have developed their priorities, for the Presidency that our country will assume in the first half of 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, the Deputy Ministry of Immigration and International Protection, the Deputy Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, and other presentations will continue at the next meeting.

Precisely because we want this budget, the second annual state budget to be prepared, to reflect as much as possible the vision of the President of the Republic himself, as well as the priorities of the governance programme. There has also been a summary presentation, a discussion of where we are to date with the implementation of the 88 actions. President Christodoulides had presented, at the beginning of the year, for 2024 and we are at a very satisfactory stage. We will, of course, continue our efforts to accelerate them even further, because we know that Cypriot society has, and rightly so, high expectations of this Government."
