The Cyprus problem, the Amalthea initiative and the bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom were among the issues mentioned by the President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides, who attended the reception of the UK High Commissioner Mr. Ifran Siddiq at the High Commissioner's residence, on the occasion of King Charles III's birthday.
In his address, the President of the Republic said that Cyprus and the United Kingdom are linked by deep historical ties of friendship and cooperation in areas such as economic, cultural and people-to-people relations.
He also stressed that since Brexit, the two countries have redefined their cooperation, deepening their bilateral relations in the areas of trade, investment, tourism, technology and security, noting that in this context, the Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Strategic Framework for Cooperation was signed in November 2022 "which is a milestone in Cyprus-UK relations", he said.
He also highlighted the dialogue held between the two countries in December last year, during which bilateral relations in the areas of trade, investment, security and others were discussed.
He added that in 2024 cooperation, such as with the bilateral Defence Cooperation Programme, with the joint arrangement for civilian development of the British Bases area, continues with the Amalthea project.
President Christodoulides also expressed his thanks to the Government of the United Kingdom for its continued support for Cyprus' Amalthea initiative, underlining the UK's significant contribution to the efforts being made through the initiative to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Referring to the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic reiterated his will to resume talks aimed at the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of Cyprus.
He added that "for us, the support and solidarity of the United Kingdom, a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), towards the efforts to achieve a just, viable and lasting solution, is of great importance".
He also noted that "we attach great importance to the UK's role in ensuring that all parties remain committed to UN Security Council resolutions and the agreed UN framework calling for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with one sovereignty, one citizenship and one international personality, with political equality."
The President of the Republic also noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, noting that from the first day of his assumption of office as President of the Republic, his absolute priority is to work for the achievement of permanent peace in Cyprus, and to break the deadlock in order to resume talks aimed at the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of UN resolutions, and to make Cyprus a normal and functional state.
To this end, he added, "we worked in a methodical and consistent manner and took initiatives to convince the international community of the urgent need to resume negotiations. We also welcomed the appointment of the UN Secretary General's personal envoy and continue to substantially support her work to promote dialogue and break the deadlock."
In conclusion, the President of the Republic expressed his best wishes to the Royal Family for strength and endurance to overcome the health problems faced by its members.
