The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr.Nicos Christodoulides, referred today to the huge importance of the shipping industry to the economy of Cyprus.

In his address at the opening of the international conference "Maritime Cyprus 2023", which is taking place in Limassol, the President of the Republic noted: "My presence here underlines the importance that the Government attaches to shipping as one of the main sectors of our country's economy", expressing great pride in its tremendous growth.

He added that the Cypriot registry ranks 11th in the world and 3rd in Europe, while Cyprus is the largest ship management centre in Europe.

President Christodoulides pointed out that the recent upgrade of the Cypriot economy to investment grade by Moody's after 12 years translates into prospects and opportunities, quality investments and new jobs.

He added that the actions and efforts of the Government are not limited to the development of our registry, but extend to strengthening the role of Cyprus in the international maritime scene. To this end, Cyprus actively participates in the formulation of international and European strategies and policies in the maritime industry.

He also referred extensively to the competitive advantages of Cypriot shipping and the actions taken by the Government to strengthen the sector through the actions of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping.

He also said that in August he sent a letter to the UN Secretary General, stressing the importance of Cyprus, as one of the largest registries, to participate in the provision of services for the transport of goods in the Black Sea in case the International Grains Initiative is launched. "It is unacceptable for Cyprus to be prevented by Turkey from participating in the initiative," he said."

He added that he also sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, noting the importance of strengthening European shipping and suggested that all EU policies in the field of maritime transport fall under an organic structure.

The President of the Republic also referred to the great importance of the green transition as one of the most fundamental challenges in the shipping sector, noting that it is everyone's duty to contribute constructively to make the transition happen.

Finally, the President of the Republic said that Cyprus attaches great importance to gender equality in the shipping sector and to this end, Ms Despina Theodosiou has been nominated for the International Maritime Organisation's Gender Equality Award.

After his address, the President of the Republic presented an award to the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Mr. Kitack Lim, for his contribution to the shipping sector.
