The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Christodoulides, referred to Cyprus' achievements in the fields of research and innovation, noting that Cyprus has become a dynamic centre in these fields.
Addressing the graduation ceremony of the Cyprus Institute, held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that "the Cyprus Institute has become a centre of excellence in science and technology, in areas such as the environment, energy, archaeology and others".
He pointed out that the work of the Cyprus Institute in climate change research has made a major contribution to the international scientific community, but has also provided excellent input to the formulation of national and regional environmental policies, such as the Cyprus Climate Initiative in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
He added that in recent decades Cyprus has become a dynamic centre of research and innovation as well as technological development and has been described as a strong innovator at a level well above the European Union (EU) average.
"Just last week, Cyprus' startup ecosystem has been ranked as the fastest growing, according to the Blink Global Startup Ecosystem 2024 Index, and is ranked among the 50 best in the world," said President Christodoulides.
He also underlined that "the Government's commitment to creating an attractive environment for innovation is evident through initiatives supported by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation", noting that "the Cyprus Institute can be a driving force in this process".
President Christodoulides also underlined the contribution of the private sector in the field of research and innovation, noting that investments in this sector also enhance the country's economic growth and create new jobs.
He also stressed that education plays an important role in promoting research and innovation, noting that the inclusion of these sectors in primary and secondary education is a priority for the Government.
