The determination of the Governments of the Republic of Cyprus and the People's Republic of China to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between them was expressed tonight by the President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides, who attended and welcomed the event held at the Embassy of China on the occasion of the 74th national anniversary of the country.
In his address to the event, President Christodoulides said, among other things, that "despite the geographical distance, the Republic of Cyprus and the People's Republic of China have established close relations of friendship and cooperation in various fields", while in recent years they have been further strengthened in the political, economic and social fields.
He added that he believes people-to-people contacts are the important force behind the strengthening of the bilateral relationship, noting that the two countries are determined to strengthen their relations in the fields of education, research and innovation, tourism, health, sports and youth.
He also said that Cyprus and China are committed to international law and the principles underpinning the UN Charter, expressing deep appreciation for China's long-standing support for the Cyprus issue and our efforts to resume talks.
President Christodoulides added that finding a just, viable and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem is his top priority, noting that he has always maintained that the reunification of Cyprus, the reunification of its people and its institutions will benefit not only Cyprus but also the wider community.
Finally, he noted that Cyprus, as an EU Member State, remains a strong supporter of the promotion of EU-China relations.
