Cypriot shipping is a key pillar of the Cypriot economy, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides said yesterday.

Addressing the event of the Cyprus Chamber of Shipping on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of its establishment, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that the shipping sector has proved resilient and has emerged Cyprus as a global shipping power.

He added that Cyprus ranks 11th in the world in merchant shipping and 3rd in the European Union.

He also noted that the shipping industry in modern times is characterised by two major changes, automation and carbonisation. These are the introduction of cleaner technologies and alternative fuels together with digitalisation and automation that are diversifying the shipping operation, creating huge potential.

He underlined that an integral part of the strategy to promote shipping is to invest in highly skilled human resources that will play a critical role in maintaining technologically advanced vessels.

Our focus must be on meeting the challenges, he said, noting that our collective efforts must focus on a smooth transition to a future characterized by innovation, sustainability and maritime prosperity.

"My presence here tonight demonstrates the importance that both I personally and the Government attach to the shipping sector," President Christodoulides said, adding that "the Government's support will continue and will be reinforced with concrete actions."

Finally, the President of the Republic pointed out that the Council of Ministers has recently taken decisive measures by establishing two advisory committees that will work closely with the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness of the Cypriot flag and the shipping sector.
