He added that the magnitude of change in the climate system is due to anthropogenic pollutants that are now at a higher level than ever before in the history of mankind, noting that there is a need for nations to greatly reduce pollutants.

"Cyprus," he said, "is located in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean, a region that is extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change and is experiencing these effects to a greater extent than other regions," noting that "in recent years we have witnessed a greater frequency of fires, droughts and floods, as well as prolonged periods of extreme heat waves, which have destroyed much of our forests and the exceptional ecosystem in our region."

He added, "it is clear that we need to act urgently, decisively and collectively."

He also underlined that "an example of collective, regional action is the 2019 Cyprus Initiative on Climate Change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, which recognizes the need for regional synergies to combat and reduce the impacts of climate change, in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement."

He also noted that in 2024 the Republic of Cyprus will host the first Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Use of Oceans of the Commonwealth countries, which aims to develop the priorities and actions to be included in the Commonwealth Declaration on Oceans.

Finally, the President of the Republic stressed the need for Governments to listen to the voices of young people to protect the environment, as they are the future of the world.
