The 70th Conference of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union (COSAC) began today in Madrid. The House of Representatives is represented by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Harris Georgiadis, and the Member of the Committee, Mr. Chrysis Pantelidis. The COSAC Conference takes place within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the current Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).
In his intervention, Mr Georgiades noted that Russia's attack on Ukraine was also an attack on the rules of international law and order. The President of the Commission also referred to Azerbaijan's aggressive policy against Armenia and the ethnic cleansing of thousands of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the terrorist actions of the extremist Islamist terrorist organisation Hamas in Israel which led to the destabilisation of the Middle East. Georgiades pointed out that it is not surprising that Turkey has been a supporter of these authoritarian and extremist forces, which supports the aggressive actions of Azerbaijan, the actions of Hamas, maintains a neutral stance in Russia's war against Ukraine and avoids imposing any sanctions against Russia.
Mr. Georgiades underlined the need for joint action against authoritarian and dictatorial regimes, extremist organisations and their supporters, stressing at the same time that there must be a clear and firm EU position based on principles and values. During the meeting with French Senators Jean-François Rapin, Claude Kern and Didier Marie, there was an exchange of views on migration and the situation in the Middle East. Mr Georgiades briefed the members of the French delegation on the challenges faced by the Republic of Cyprus on the issue of illegal immigration, as it is the EU member state that receives the largest number of asylum seekers in proportion to its population. He underlined the instrumentalisation of the migration issue by Turkey since the majority of asylum seekers arrive from the occupied territories through the ceasefire line and asked the EU to exert its influence on third countries in order to limit the problem.
Finally, Mr. Georgiades briefed on the role that Cyprus can play in the situation in the Middle East and informed the members of the French delegation about the Cypriot government's proposal to create a maritime corridor to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
