The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Piero Fassino, who is making a second working visit to Cyprus, in order to complete the drafting of his report, which will be submitted to the Plenary Assembly of the CSCE for approval at the forthcoming June session.
During the meeting, the Speaker thanked Mr Fassino for his work and expressed the hope that his final report and resolution on Famagusta would contribute to the efforts being made to resume talks and end Turkish provocations in the enclosed city of Famagusta, in violation of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and in disregard of the European Council's conclusions on the issue. Our goal, Demetriou pointed out, is to break the current deadlock and resume talks immediately on the basis of the agreed framework for a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as envisaged by the relevant UN resolutions. Unfortunately, he noted, Turkey's continuous violations within the buffer zone as well as the opening of part of the enclosed area of Famagusta, but also its insistence on a "two-state" solution in Cyprus and its continued refusal to engage in dialogue make this prospect difficult. In response to a question by Mr Fassino, the President of the Parliament expressed her support for initiatives to strengthen the climate of trust with the Turkish Cypriot community, including confidence-building measures. Demetriou also stressed that the international community must show the same determination in the face of any violation of international law, human rights and the international legal order.
