The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, will travel to Dublin tomorrow to participate in the European Conference of Speakers of the Parliaments of the Member States of the Council of Europe, on 28 and 29 September 2023. The Speaker of the House of Representatives will be accompanied by the Director General of the Parliament, Ms. Tasoula Ieronymidou, the Director of the International Relations Service, Ms. Marina Adamidou and the Senior International Relations Officer, Ms. Gabriella Marangou.
The Conference is co-organised by the Parliament of Ireland and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and will be attended by over sixty Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Parliaments of the Council of Europe Member States.
The three themes of the Conference are "The consequences of Russia's armed attack on Ukraine and the role of national parliaments in the reconstruction of the country", "The challenges facing representative democracy in unstable times" and "Equality and multiculturalism in public representation: the participation of young people, women and ethnic and social groups as parliamentary representatives".
This will be preceded by a working breakfast for women Speakers of Parliaments and a special event on hate speech and threats of violence against elected representatives.
In the margins of the Conference, Ms Demetriou will have separate meetings with her counterparts from Council of Europe member states.
