[PIO] The President of the House of Representatives received the Minister of Health of Greece

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs.Anita Demetriou, received today the Minister of Health of Greece, Mr.Adonis Georgiades. Mr Georgiades was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Health, Mr Marios Themistocleous and the MP, former Minister of Health of Greece, Mr Athanasios Plevris.

Welcoming the Greek officials, the Speaker of the House of Representatives underlined that the fraternal relations, the excellent cooperation and the wide range of synergies between Greece and Cyprus, at all levels, are reaffirmed at every possible opportunity and in practice. He noted, in this regard, the positive outcome of the issue of issuing a Social Security Number (AMKA) for Cypriot students in Greece and again expressed his thanks to Mr Georgiades for his substantial intervention in this direction. Demetriou stressed that the united front between Greece and Cyprus must be further strengthened in view of the complex challenges facing both countries and as members of the wider European family.

Referring to the current developments regarding the Cyprus problem, the Speaker of the House of Representatives deplored the increasing Turkish provocations on the ground and underlined that the immediate goal remains the resumption of talks to resolve the Cyprus problem within the framework and in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.

Regarding the flare-up in the Middle East, Demetriou stressed the importance of the "Amalthea" initiative, as indicative of Cyprus' important geostrategic position.

Georgiades underlined that Greece and Cyprus have a common front in the face of the difficult challenges they have to face in a particularly unstable and rapidly changing era. He stressed the need to broaden this front within the European Union in order to address these challenges through joint actions in the health sector and other areas.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on issues of wider political interest, in particular on the situation in the Middle East, as well as on the upcoming European elections.
