The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou received today a delegation of the Municipalities of Kilkis, Lemnos and Avdira, twinned with the Municipality of Lysis, which is in Cyprus following an invitation to participate in the event "Lysis Remembrance Day" organized yesterday by the Municipality of Lysis. The delegation was accompanied by the Mayor Mr. Andreas Kaouris and members of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Lysis.
Welcoming the delegation, the President of the Parliament welcomed the initiative of the Municipality of Lyssis and praised the importance of the institution of town twinning, which, as she said, performs an important task in the effort to strengthen relations between peoples, especially Greece and Cyprus, which are united by fraternal and historical ties and identical cultural elements. The further strengthening of the excellent cooperation between Cyprus and Greece and the preservation of memory and tradition, Ms Demetriou stressed, are strengthened through events and actions, such as those carried out by the Lyssians fighting for the return to their ancestral lands, with the participation of twinned municipalities of Greece.
The Speaker of the Parliament underlined the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the efforts for the resumption of the talks to achieve a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He stressed the importance of maintaining a united front of engagement to counter the intensifying provocativeness of Turkey, which is seeking the creation of new de facto situations, violating the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus and the buffer zone, most recently in the Pyla area and the enclosed area of Famagusta, while proceeding with the Islamization of the occupied territories and changing the demographic character of Cyprus through continued colonization. She noted that the principled stance that the international community rightly adhered to in the case of Ukraine, which Cyprus supported from the beginning, should also be applied in the case of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
Demetriou also noted that the efforts to normalize relations between Greece and Turkey are a positive step, but their outcome will depend on the will and the real intentions of Turkey.
Mr. Kaouris and members of the delegation underlined the strong ties that link the twinned municipalities and made special reference to the military service of Gregory Afxentios in Doirani in the Municipality of Kilkis and the existence of a settlement named Afxentios in the Municipality of Avdira in honour of the hero of EOKA.
A discussion followed, during which Mrs Demetriou informed the delegation about the institutional role and the work of the House of Representatives and the substantial action developed by the House in the framework of parliamentary diplomacy. Finally, Ms Demetriou stressed the importance of further mobilization of young people at the level of local government and more broadly in political life and referred to the initiatives and actions developed by the House of Representatives in this direction.
