The Speaker of the House of Representatives Ms Anita Demetriou participated today in an extraordinary teleconference convened by the President of the European Parliament Ms Roberta Metsola with the Presidents of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union (EU) and with the participation of the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Mr. In her intervention, the President of the Parliament underlined the clear position of the Republic of Cyprus in favour of respect for the principles of international legitimacy.
For Cyprus, the President of the Parliament said, the images of the war evoke painful memories. For 48 years, Mrs Demetriou stressed, we have been living next to 50,000 occupying troops, while attempts are being made to create new facts and this is an additional reason for our support to the Ukrainian people.
Cyprus, the Speaker of the Parliament noted, fully respects European principles and values and is fully aligned with the decisions taken at EU level. Praising the immediate and decisive reaction of the EU, Ms Demetriou said that the House of Representatives adopted a unanimous resolution on 24 February in which the House condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and called for a return to dialogue, as far as, Ms Demetriou added, this may be possible in the midst of military operations. She also noted her report on the situation in Ukraine at yesterday's plenary session of Parliament and the observance of a one-minute silence in memory of the victims, as well as the support given to Ukraine by Members of Parliament participating in international parliamentary activities. Mrs Demetriou also referred to the forthcoming shipment of medical equipment and basic necessities from Cyprus for the relief of the people of Ukraine.
I want to assure you, Mr President, said Mrs Demetriou, addressing her Ukrainian counterpart, that Cyprus and its Parliament will stand by Ukraine in every possible way, as this issue concerns us all.
