The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs.Anita Demetriou, in her capacity as Ambassador of the Political Leaders Network (WPL), made a statement on behalf of the House of Representatives at the conclusion of the Political Leaders Summit in Athens.

In her statement, the Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed that the actions of political leaders must be characterized by integrity, accountability and commitment to upholding democratic values and restoring citizens' trust in public institutions. Our actions as political leaders must promote the cultivation of a political culture that fosters bridging party divisions, overcoming ideological differences, seeking consensus and common ground, and focusing on the public good and common goals and interests, she noted. In addition, the President of the Parliament stressed the need to intensify efforts to eliminate all systemic inequalities, which undermine democracy and fuel the rise of extremist ideologies, hate speech and populism. The answer to these challenges, Demetriou stressed, is more democracy, upholding human rights and ensuring equal opportunities for all.

Subsequently, the President of the Parliament stressed that the active participation of women and young people in decision-making processes and public debate is essential for the formation of resilient and inclusive democracies, noting that taking relevant initiatives is the collective responsibility of political leaders.

Exercising strict parliamentary control over the fulfilment of the government's commitments, enacting the necessary legislation to strengthen government accountability, empowering civil society and independent oversight authorities, and enhancing transparency in decision-making processes by facilitating public access to reliable information, is a primary responsibility of parliamentarians.

The President of the Parliament called on citizens to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming elections, thus contributing to the protection and strengthening of democracy. Demetriou pointed out that gender equality is an integral element of democracy and therefore the inclusion of different views and perspectives in legislation and public policies contributes to imbuing them with democratic legitimacy, ownership, representativeness and accountability. Demetriou expressed her firm commitment, in her dual capacity as the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives and WPL Ambassador, to work with determination to promote women's empowerment and accelerate progress in this direction.
