The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou had a meeting today with the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights, Mr Nicolas Schmit, during his visit to Cyprus. Mr Schmit was accompanied by the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, Ms Myrto Zambarta, and officials.

During the meeting, the challenges facing the European Union (EU), such as the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East, EU security issues, the refugee and migration crisis and the need for a more social Europe that responds to the daily problems of European citizens were discussed.

The President pointed out that the EU is perhaps going through one of the most difficult periods in its history, where it will have to face multifaceted challenges and at the same time provide clear answers and European solutions to the problems faced by European citizens. Referring to the forthcoming European elections, Ms Demetriou pointed out that the Union, in addition to the above, will have to face at the same time the challenge from extreme political circles within the Union, who, taking advantage of the problems of citizens, try to manipulate public opinion. The direct and timely interventions of the EU in international issues, Ms Demetriou pointed out, as well as the observance of a unified European position on current problems that concern citizens, can be a guarantee for an optimistic European future.

The President of the Parliament also informed the European Commissioner about the situation in Cyprus and the prospects for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and criticized the increasing Turkish provocations against the Republic of Cyprus. He noted that the resolution of the Cyprus problem would make Cyprus a stronger pillar of stability in the region. Cyprus supports peace and stability and uses its excellent relations with the states of the region to de-escalate the crisis in the Middle East and to provide the necessary humanitarian aid to Gaza through the sea corridor.
