The contacts of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anita Demetriou, continued and were completed today, in the framework of her visit to Paris.
Yesterday afternoon, during a special ceremony in the French Senate, the President of the House of Representatives awarded the Medal of the House of Representatives to the former President and current member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces, Senator Christian Cambon. In her address, Mrs Demetriou described Mr Cambon as a sincere and selfless friend of Cyprus, who through his activities in the Senate has highlighted the key geostrategic role of Cyprus in a highly unstable region and the need to further deepen the strategic cooperation between France and Cyprus, as partners by choice. The cooperation between France and Cyprus is based on our European principles and the common vision of achieving conditions of peace, stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean region, she stressed.
Mr. Cambon assured the President that he will continue to support Cyprus on the basis of these principles and to raise the issue of the violation of international law and the law of the sea against the Republic of Cyprus in the French Senate and internationally. She stressed that, in the light of the complex challenges in the wider Middle East region, France's voice must be heard even louder against these violations.
Finally, the President of the Parliament had a meeting with the President of the Board of Directors of the CLEF network, which coordinates the action of 62 women's organisations in France. During the meeting, the growing challenges in terms of protecting and guaranteeing women's rights were discussed in light of the growing instability and uncertainty in Europe and the world. The President stressed the need to join forces and take collective action to adopt the necessary legislation and its effective implementation, as well as to keep gender equality and women's empowerment high on the political agenda. In this context, mutual information was exchanged on the legislation on these issues in force in the two countries and views were exchanged on possible ways of working together to achieve the desired objectives.
