The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, participated today in a charity basketball match in the framework of Telethon 2024, at the Keravnos stadium.

The game was also attended by members of the Government, journalists and athletes.

In his statements to the media on the sidelines of the event, the President of the Republic, asked whether such events, such as today's, raise public awareness, said: "Apart from the charitable dimension, which we always support such actions, we have a goal, which I mentioned during the election campaign - and we will implement it, we are implementing it in a sport in Cyprus that is changing. We must do and invest much more in sport, it is the future, it is the new generation. That is why I am here today, together with the President of the COA, precisely to show the Government's will to do much more in sport."

Asked how the Government will stand by the athletes who will take part in the upcoming Olympic Games, the President of the Republic said: "I have already announced special financial support so that our athletes, who are very close to the participation threshold, can be helped to achieve their goal of participating in both the Olympics and the Paralympics."
