[PIO] The President of the Hellenic Republic had a telephone conversation with the President of the EPP

President of the Hellenic Republic Nicos Christodoulides had a telephone conversation this morning with the President of the European People's Party (EPP) Manfred Weber.

During their conversation they discussed the participation of the President of the Hellenic Republic in the EPP meetings.

President Christodoulides and Mr Weber have already invited the President of the Republic to participate in the upcoming EPP Summit, which will take place before the European Council meeting on 23 March in Brussels.

President Christodoulides and Mr Weber exchanged views on the issues on the agenda of the European Council.

President Christodoulides outlined his proposal for an active and leading role of the EU in efforts to break the Cyprus deadlock and resume talks on the basis of the agreed framework for a solution, always within the UN framework.

For his part, the EPP President underlined the EPP's long-standing position on the side of Cyprus for a solution within the agreed framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, the UN resolutions and the principles and values of the EU and the European acquis.

He also agreed with the position that the EU has an active and leading role in the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

At the same time, it was agreed that the President of the Republic should develop his proposal before the EPP Summit.
