The President of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for the European way of life, Mr Margaritis Schinas.

Welcoming Mr Schinas, Mrs Demetriou expressed her thanks for the efforts made on behalf of the European Commission to resolve the migration issue and underlined the need to continue these efforts in the light of the volatile situation in the Middle East region. Referring to Cyprus, Mr Schinas highlighted the progress made in reducing migration flows and increasing returns and stressed the importance of expanding and strengthening cooperation with the countries of the region in order to address the migration issue more effectively.

The meeting also discussed issues related to the upcoming European elections. In this context, the President of the Parliament underlined the need for the EU to pursue more effective policies, as well as to further highlight its leading role in the international arena, so that the work produced is visible to European citizens.

Finally, there was an exchange of views on other regional developments and topical issues.
