[PIO] The President of the Hellenic Parliament received the Secretary General of Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the Secretary General for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs of Greece, Mr George Kalantzis. Mr Kalantzis was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus, Mr Ioannis Papameletiou. Demetriou, require the development of synergies and actions that promote dialogue, tolerance and inclusion in modern democracies. The President of the Parliament referred in particular to the phenomena of hate speech and misinformation, which, as she pointed out, need to be addressed jointly in order to defend democracy and human rights.

Referring to the current situation regarding the Cyprus problem, the Speaker expressed concern about Turkey's intensifying provocations against the Republic of Cyprus and stressed the need for the immediate resumption of talks to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with international law and the relevant UN resolutions.

Mr. Kalantzis referred to his responsibilities as Secretary General for Religious Affairs and noted the excellent relations and the excellent cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, both at state and ecclesiastical level. He praised the role and contribution of the Church of Cyprus in preventing and dealing with the attacks on Orthodoxy, which, as he pointed out, have wider geopolitical dimensions. Mr Kalantzis informed the Speaker of the Parliament about the initiatives and actions of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs aimed at students, including an educational visit to Cyprus.

For her part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives informed the Secretary General for Religious Affairs about the activities developed by the House of Representatives in the framework of parliamentary diplomacy, mainly through the participation of a delegation of the House in the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, but also more broadly through actions that promote peaceful coexistence and inter-religious dialogue. He expressed his and the House of Representatives' readiness for all possible cooperation in this context.
