The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs.Anita Demetriou received today the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports of Greece Mr.Kyriakos Pierrakakis, who is on an official visit to Cyprus Mr.Pierrakakis was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Mr. During the meeting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives was informed by the Greek Minister about the Programme of Cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in the field of Education for the years 2023 - 2027, which he signed earlier with the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus, Mrs Athena Michaelidou.

An exchange of views followed regarding the immediate resolution of issues concerning Cypriot students studying in Greece, such as the acquisition of a social security number, the extension of the registration period for male students in Greek higher education institutions due to the fulfilment of military obligations, etc.The President of the Parliament expressed her concern about the recent results - disappointing for Cyprus - of the international evaluation programme "PISA" of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), stressing that drastic corrective actions must be taken in the field of education. For his part, Mr. Pierrakakis noted that the results are also worrying for Greece and agreed on the need to take corrective measures in the education system.
They also discussed the results of the recent visit of the Parliamentary Committee on Education to Athens, as well as the recent ratification by the Greek Parliament of the Agreement between Greece and Cyprus on the mutual academic recognition of qualifications.
Finally, ways of exchanging know-how and good practices regarding legislation related to education and the educational environment were examined.
