The President of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr.Harris Georgiades, met today with a delegation of senior officials of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), led by Mr.Jason Isaacson, Head of the AJC's Policy and Political Affairs Department.

Georgiades stressed the importance of further strengthening the friendly relations between Cyprus, Greece and Israel, within the framework of the 3+1 trilateral cooperation mechanism, including the US, and its possible extension to other countries. He also noted the high level of relations between Cyprus and the US and stressed that strategic cooperation between countries with common principles and commitment to democratic institutions is crucial for ensuring peace and stability, particularly in the turbulent region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, which is rife with conflict and war. Georgiades further noted that Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union, is making a constructive contribution to these efforts, particularly with regard to the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Amalthea initiative.

For their part, the Commission members expressed their deep appreciation for Cyprus' prominent role in the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza and underlined its crucial role as a factor of stability and cooperation in this highly sensitive region.

Mr. Georgiades also answered questions regarding individual aspects of the Cyprus problem, such as the property issue, Turkey's violations in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus and the instrumentalisation of migratory flows from Turkey through the occupied territories.

Mr Isaacson underlined the Commission's long-standing support for the removal of the injustice that Cyprus has experienced for 50 years following Turkey's invasion and continued occupation of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. He also stressed that the visit of the AJC delegation to Cyprus and its exchange of views with Cypriot officials adds greatly to the already excellent relations and cooperation that the Commission maintains with Cypriot expatriate organisations in the US.
