The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Mr. Harris Georgiades held an online meeting today with the Chairman of the Knesset Foreign and Defence Committee Mr. Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.
During the meeting, the importance of further deepening and strengthening the already excellent relations between the Parliaments of Cyprus and Israel on a bilateral and trilateral level was mutually stressed, especially in light of the current period of crisis for regional peace, security and stability. In this context, Mr Georgiades and Mr Edelstein jointly expressed their readiness for the rapid resumption of exchanges between the committees they chair, including in the framework of trilateral cooperation between the Cyprus-Greece-Israel Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committees.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr Georgiades, condemned the Hamas terrorist attack against Israeli citizens on 7 October 2023, underlining Israel's right to self-defence. Mr Georgiades also stressed that after the end of Israel's war against Hamas, every effort must be made to ensure conditions that will allow for lasting peace in the Middle East and the wider region. Edelstein expressed thanks for the support of the Republic of Cyprus to Israel and its immediate condemnation of the Hamas terrorist attack, as well as for the country's initiative to open a sea corridor for humanitarian aid to Gaza.
