The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, paid a visit today to the Archbishop Makarios III High School in Platy Aglantzia, where he observed the pilot programme for the learning of German, the implementation of which started for the first time in the educational life of Cyprus during this school year.

Mr Steinmeier is on an official visit to Cyprus from 11 to 13 February, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides. This is the first visit by a German President to Cyprus since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The inclusion in the German President's programme of a visit to a school to observe the pilot project demonstrates the strengthening of the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Germany in the field of education in recent years.

The German President was received at the school by a Cypriot delegation headed by the Director General of the Ministry of Education and Youth, Mrs Marina Ioannou Hasapi, as the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs Athena Michaelidou, is absent abroad.

As part of his visit, the German President had the opportunity to attend the lesson and talk to students, and then discussed with the Cypriot delegation the prospects of the pilot programme and more generally the Cyprus-Germany cooperation in the field of Education.

Recognising the benefits of multilingualism in the modern world, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recognizing the benefits of multilingualism in the modern world, is implementing a pilot programme of German language learning in specific Gymnasiums and High Schools in Nicosia and Limassol from the current school year. Through the programme, students are given the opportunity to learn German at a very good level, as well as to obtain certification of their level of German language learning, in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Cyprus. The intention of the Ministry of Education and Culture is to evaluate and gradually expand the programme to schools in other provinces.
